# The Digitisation Insider: September’s Digitisation Highlights

### What we worked on in September 2026
During September, we've worked on several projects including The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Historic Houses Foundation, Twinings and The National Memorial Arboretum. I have been working on The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo for the majority of the month, which has been one of our biggest projects over the past few months.
I have been enjoying scanning the variety of material that we have had from The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, particularly photo prints and negatives. I’m also excited to share interesting material from Twinings and The National Memorial Arboretum.
### Project Spotlight
This month I have been continuing with The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. This has been an ongoing project, but this month was the first time that I have been scanning their material, which is a mix of photo prints and negatives.
Our vanguard set up for photo prints has been slightly different for this project as they want a high resolution. All of their material is very detailed so this makes sense why they want a higher resolution compared to ordinary documents. To be able to scan using this resolution of 600 dpi, we place a board over the vanguard glass (to protect the glass) and place a flat cradle on top of the board. This increases the height of the workspace so that the material is closer to the camera. We then place the black cloth over the cradle for a cleaner look as we do for all scanning.

The photo prints have been images of various bands and performances, it seems like these performances have been shown at Edinburgh Castle.
I have also been scanning negatives for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. For these negatives I have used our Epson scanner. I connected the scanner to the PC and scanned the negatives using the EPSON scan software. These scans and some of the photo prints look like they are behind the scenes of the performances showing the performers preparing for the shows. There are even some images showing personal experiences including resting at their dorms.

### Interesting items scanned
We received a small project from the National Memorial Arboretum, I enjoyed scanning this project as the photos were taken at their beautiful memorial site. The memorial site in Staffordshire is dedicated to people who served or sacrificed for the UK. The site is made up of gardens containing memorials. One of the most common memorials is the Armed Forces Memorial for members who died in the Second World War.
For these photo prints, I used the same vanguard set up that I used for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo as these prints also needed a resolution of 600 dpi.

Lastly, we have been continuing our work with Twinings, this batch included handwritten bound volumes and photo books. These books are about Twining’s famous teas. My favourite book is the photo book which includes photos of all the famous teas on display, as shown below!
There are also books documenting the different types of tea, with numbers recorded alongside each one. These numbers appear to indicate the amount of stock they had of each type of tea at the time.
### New and upcoming projects
In October, we will be continuing with The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Historic Houses Foundation. We also have several new projects coming in including Scottish Canals, The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple and a new batch from Unilever!
### New services and improvements
We have recently had a variety of different sized negatives from The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Some of these sizes have been unusual, so we have been fine tuning the perfect resolution for each sized negative that we might come across. Resolution is very important, especially for photo prints and negatives. If the resolution is too low, the final image can look blurry or pixelated.
