Paul Sugden, CEO of TownsWeb Archiving, embarked on a remarkable cycling journey alongside his friend Pete Manship, taking on the full length of Portugal in support of Age UK Northamptonshire.
Their route, stretching over 650 miles with a staggering 50,000 feet of ascent, spanned October 7th to 19th, 2024.
Reflecting on the challenge beforehand, Paul remarked, "It will be quite hot and quite a challenge, but we're doing it for such a worthwhile cause."
The journey was far from smooth, with relentless obstacles including gale-force winds, thick fog, and driving rain. Thunderstorms and fallen trees added to the danger, leading to three hospitalisations, one cyclist being flown home with broken bones, and another forced to abandon the ride.
Paul himself endured a nasty fall and injuries, demonstrating the extreme conditions and personal toll of the challenge.
Despite his injuries, Paul powered on, as experienced cyclists in the group remarked that they had never encountered such extreme circumstances. Yet, through camaraderie and determination, Paul and Pete persevered, bringing the group together and inspiring everyone to push forward.
Battling through these challenges, the team’s efforts were met with immense support, as Paul encouraged further contributions through his online platforms, emphasising the importance of the charity’s work for older individuals in need.
Their dramatic final day saw them conquer an 11-kilometer climb through the low-altitude Caldeirão mountain range. Emerging on the other side, they descended toward Tavira in the Algarve, where they celebrated their achievement with champagne on the beach.
Reflecting on the journey, Paul described it as an “epic, tough, but unforgettable experience, filled with memories and lovely people.”
Upon returning home, they had raised an incredible £1,375 (currently rising to £1,454) and the funds will help to support Age UK Northamptonshire’s essential services, including day centers, in-home care, and hospital discharge programs, which empower older individuals to live with dignity and independence.
Roger Harris, Sales & Marketing Manager, residents Brenda and Maureen, and Emma Atkins, Day Centre Coordinator of Age UK Northamptonshire presented Paul with the oversized cheque on 19th November 2024.
This challenge is a testament to the impact of leadership, determination, and community spirit.
